Choose a reef builder around the installation and the care plan
Aquarium Design International describes life-support design and turnkey installations, with specific U.S. maintenance markets. SeaVisions lists remote monitoring and curator services. Tenji is an alternative for a complex aquarium or aquatic exhibit. These are different services to compare; none of them removes the need to identify the person responsible for routine care.
A regional team may fit better: City Aquarium for a New York fabrication brief, House of Fins for its Northeast reef-project examples, The Fish Gallery near its showroom markets, or Aquarium Design Group for a Houston aquarium. Use the coverage comparison to separate the installation footprint from ongoing maintenance.
What should a custom reef aquarium proposal include?
Ask the builder to define the display, support, filtration and life-support equipment, lighting, controls, water-preparation space, installation and commissioning scope. Have it identify service access and equipment replacement routes in the proposed design. The equipment specification should come from the aquarium designer for your intended livestock and site.
Request separate responsibilities for system testing, livestock introduction, owner training, maintenance visits, consumables and emergency response. If monitoring is offered, ask what is monitored, who receives alerts and who can attend the site. Remote monitoring alone does not establish an on-site response service.
Ask for reef evidence before choosing a company
Request a completed reef project with a comparable display size, setting and service arrangement. Ask what the provider fabricated and installed, how long the system has been operating and whether it still maintains that aquarium. A finished portfolio image is a starting point for those questions, not evidence of long-term performance.
For a renovation, ask who will assess the existing system and manage livestock while work happens. For a new system, agree on the commissioning and care handoff before placing a fabrication order. Compare written scopes rather than treating all custom reef packages as equivalent.
