Shortlist builders that can show a comparable aquarium and explain who will install and maintain yours. Give each the same brief, then compare the named team, included work, service coverage, and handover. A beautiful portfolio earns a conversation; written responsibilities help you choose.
Give every builder the same starting brief
Include the city, room photos or drawings, intended fish or plants, approximate display dimensions, and whether this is a new build or a retrofit. Add your budget, desired timing, and who will care for the aquarium.
Mark decisions you have not made, such as reef versus freshwater or cabinetry style. Ask each builder to identify which decisions it needs before designing or pricing the work.
Match the company to the job
For a tank replacement, ask about removal, existing equipment, and care for any livestock during the work. For an aquarium built into a room, ask who will coordinate the tank, millwork, utilities, and service openings with your architect or contractor.
Check whether the company is proposing fabrication only, installation, or a complete design-and-care service. Aquarium Architecture, for example, describes collaboration with architects and designers from consultation through maintenance; the proposal still needs to identify the services included for your home.
Ask these questions in the first conversation
Comparable work: Can you show a completed aquarium with a similar system, setting, and access challenge? Which parts did your team deliver, and do you still maintain it?
Project team: Who will lead design and installation? Which work will be done by others, and who coordinates it?
Service: Who will make routine visits at my address? What work falls to me between visits, and who responds when something goes wrong?
Access: Can you show how a technician will clean the display and replace the largest equipment after the cabinetry is finished?
Turn the answers into a shortlist
Compare two or three firms whose scope and service arrangements fit. Request an itemized proposal, one relevant client reference the company is authorized to share, and an example of its handover information.
Ask for clarification when a quotation says “turnkey” but does not assign building work, or when “maintenance available” has no named service team. Keep an unresolved item beside the quote until the company answers it.
Confirm building coordination before appointment
Have the aquarium builder and the relevant building professionals agree who handles support, electrical and plumbing work, drainage, ventilation, and finishes. EPA guidance identifies moisture and condensation control as building concerns; include them in that conversation.
