Choose a custom aquarium builder by comparing a written project brief against each firm’s role, relevant experience, building coordination, life-support scope, commissioning, and ongoing service. Ask every shortlisted firm the same questions, compare written responsibilities, and bring the appropriate licensed professionals into building work.
Start with a comparable project brief
Give every prospective builder the same starting information: intended livestock and viewing goals, proposed location, approximate display dimensions, access constraints, desired service arrangement, and known renovation or new-construction work. Record unresolved decisions instead of asking firms to price different assumptions as though they were comparable.
Ask who will coordinate the aquarium with the architect or interior designer, general contractor, structural professional, electrician, plumber, and heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning team where those roles are needed. A builder’s aquarium scope is not automatically the scope of every building trade.
Test the proposed scope and handoff
Ask each firm to identify the display, life-support equipment, controls, cabinetry or finishes, delivery path, installation, testing, commissioning, documentation, and training it expects to provide. Request explicit exclusions, dependencies, allowances, and the party responsible for each interface before comparing proposals.
Discuss how routine maintenance, water preparation, consumables, equipment replacement, emergency response, warranties, and handover records will work after installation. Do not infer that a fabrication or installation scope includes long-term husbandry or building-service responsibility unless the proposal says so.
Check evidence without treating it as a recommendation
Review the firm’s own current materials and ask for project-specific references or examples that the firm is authorized to share. Confirm what was actually within the firm’s scope, whether the project resembles yours, and whether the evidence is current enough to inform a shortlist.
