Project process

From a compelling idea to a maintainable system

A credible process resolves the room, technical system, ownership plan, and team interfaces before they become expensive site surprises.

A six-part project framework

Projects overlap and vary, but each phase should leave the next one with clearer decisions, responsibilities, and records.

  1. Brief and feasibility

    Define the viewing experience, intended animals or plants, room, decision-makers, maintenance responsibility, access, utilities, and constraints before committing to a visible design.

  2. Concept and responsibility map

    Develop dimensions, system direction, service space, finish intent, and a clear map of who owns structure, penetrations, utilities, moisture, drainage, controls, and coordination.

  3. Detailed design and approvals

    Coordinate aquarium, life support, architectural work, specialist trades, delivery, replacement paths, and any required professional review or permitting for the actual project.

  4. Fabrication and site preparation

    Fabrication proceeds while the site is prepared to agreed dimensions and tolerances. Changes should be documented across the affected parties, not handled in isolation.

  5. Installation and commissioning

    Install and test the complete system, including circulation, controls, alarms, drainage, service access, and operating procedures, before treating the project as handed over.

  6. Maturation and recurring care

    Introduce living contents according to an appropriate plan, monitor system development, maintain records, and keep a defined service and emergency-response arrangement.

Who may need a seat at the table

Depending on the project, the team may include an aquarium designer or fabricator, life-support specialist, maintenance provider, architect or interior designer, structural engineer, general contractor, millworker, electrician, plumber, mechanical professional, waterproofing specialist, and livestock or planting expert.

This is not a universal roster. The site, jurisdiction, project scope, and professional responsibilities determine which qualified parties are appropriate.
