Buyer guide

Upgrade Your REEFER Skimmer to DC or Buy a New One?

Compare a manufacturer-supported REEFER skimmer DC upgrade with keeping the AC setup or buying a complete skimmer, including controls, fitting and care.

A large reef aquarium brings color and movement to a living room.

At a glance

Consider the manufacturer’s DC upgrade when your existing REEFER skimmer remains suitable and in good condition, you want the added control functions, and the complete fitted quote makes sense beside a replacement. Keep a satisfactory AC setup if you do not need those functions. Have your aquarium specialist confirm the exact model and parts, including the required controller, and assess any fault before treating an upgrade as a repair.

You want the new functions. Do you need a whole new skimmer?

Your reef aquarium already has a REEFER skimmer that fits the sump. Then you see the newer DC version, with app functions and sensor-based pump regulation. It is tempting to replace the whole thing, but you wonder how much of the equipment you already own could stay.

We'd compare a supported upgrade before replacing a sound, suitable skimmer just to gain those functions. Red Sea describes a DC upgrade kit for its regular AC-pump REEFER skimmers. That gives you a real alternative to a complete purchase. It still needs an exact-model check and a complete quote; a pump price alone won't settle the decision.

First separate a wanted upgrade from a fault

Tell your aquarium specialist what you want to improve. Is the existing skimmer doing its agreed job, but you want different controls? Or has it become noisy, stopped working or become difficult to maintain? Have an actual problem assessed before choosing equipment. Buying a DC kit is not a diagnosis.

Ask the specialist to assess the retained body, cup and other components, as well as the pump. If the existing assembly remains suitable, keeping it may be sensible. If it needs substantial additional work or no longer suits the aquarium, compare that work with a properly selected complete replacement. A new motor does not establish the condition or suitability of everything around it.

What is in the upgrade, and what is still missing?

Red Sea lists a PSK-DC 1200 pump, skim sensor, controller cable, power supply, AC power cable, replacement skimmer lid and instructions in its upgrade kit. Its DC-skimmer page separately identifies the ReefRun Dual Controller as a required, separately sold item. Ask the seller to identify every part in your actual offer.

If you already own a controller, have the supplier confirm the exact model, compatibility and available connection for this purchase. An existing Red Sea device or app account is not enough to establish that the necessary hardware is present. The published manual also requires controller onboarding and pump setup before the pump works.

Have the supplier put the kit, any additional controller, fitting and setup on one quote. Compare that with a complete replacement quote on the same basis. Ask whether either offer leaves you supplying a part you thought was included.

Which extra functions would you actually use?

Red Sea describes sensor-based regulation of the DC pump and app functions including schedules and collection-cup notifications. Ask for a demonstration of the functions you want, using the proposed system. Would seeing a cup notification help you arrange care? Would app integration make an existing routine easier? Those are useful reasons to consider the upgrade.

Keep the promise specific. A motorized pump and sensor are not an automatic neck cleaner, and a notification still needs someone to respond. Ask your care provider how the proposed functions fit the aquarium's routine rather than assuming they remove visits or make the system unattended.

Our controller guide covers the broader choice between monitoring and control. Here, the narrower question is whether retaining this skimmer gives you the particular functions you want at a worthwhile total cost.

Will the retained skimmer still be pleasant to service?

The manufacturer's upgrade instructions describe changing the lid and transferring the neck wiper. Have the specialist confirm the exact conversion and demonstrate continued access for removing the cup and pump. Keeping the body saves little frustration if the finished arrangement makes routine care awkward.

Red Sea's manual still calls for regular pump cleaning. Agree who will look after the retained parts, the new pump and the sensor, and ask what support applies to each. The upgrade should come with an understandable care arrangement; do not count an assumed reduction in the maintenance bill as a saving.

Compare three complete choices

Ask for the cost of keeping the existing AC arrangement in service, fitting the supported DC upgrade, and supplying a suitable complete replacement. Include any assessed repair, required controls, setup and changes to the care agreement. Get current availability and written warranty terms for the actual order, including the parts you keep.

We'd keep a satisfactory AC setup when the added functions would rarely be used. We'd favor an approved upgrade when the existing skimmer is sound and the fitted price leaves a worthwhile difference. A complete replacement deserves consideration when the retained equipment needs substantial work or a different skimmer is genuinely required. There is no universal percentage saving that chooses for you.
